Kanyakumari is located at the southern tip
of the Indian subcontinent. With an area of
1672 sq.km. Kanyakumari occupies 1.29% of
the total extent of Tamil Nadu. The district
name is spelled as ' Kanniyakumari ' in official
records which are in tune with the spoken
name of the district in Tamil language. The
District is bound by Tirunelveli District
on the North and the east. The South Eastern
boundary is the Gulf of Mannar . On the South
and the South West, the boundaries are the
Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea . On the
West and North West it is bound by Kerala.

Rameswaram is as ancient as Ramayana. This
place was noted in Ramayana. Devotees hailed
Rameswaram as the Varanasi of the south. This
island people Trust Sea for their living.
It is treated as a holy place, devotees bathe
in the sea and bathing gate is popular there.
Rameswaram is known for its long corridors
and towers and 36 theerthams. Veranda is 197metres
long south to north. The temple is facing
the east. The sea is just 100 metres away
from the entrance of the temple. Sea is very
calm, that water is considered scared.

The history of the temple dates back to as far as 9th Century A.D, when Pallavas, the rulers of Kancheepuram, patronized this shrine. But it was not until the time of Vijayanagara dynasty in 15th Century AD that the temple got recognition, and the contributions started pouring in.From 1843 AD, when the Empire started rising in India till 1933 AD, the administrative activities of the Tirumala temple were overseen by Mahants of the Hatiramji Mutt.In 1933, the Madras government took over and handed the reins of administration to an autonomous body known as the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Committee.Again in 1951, the TTD was reconstituted with a board of trustees, while an Executive Officer operated as its administrative head.

A grand 'golden temple', the Mahalakshmi temple, located on a sprawling 100 acres of land at Sripuram, near Vellore, has been constructed by Vellore-based Sri Narayani Peetam, headed by spiritual leader Sri Sakthi Amma. The consecration (kumbhabhishekam) is to be performed August 24.The temple, covering 55,000 sq ft, has intricate carvings and sculptures in gold. Except for the pathway, the entire structure has been made of gold and copper.About 400 goldsmiths and coppersmiths, including craftsmen from Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanam, have completed the architectural marvel in gold in six years. The approximate cost of the temple is Rs 600 crore.

The Bhavani amman temple is possibly the most popular one in this region and a section of the people come here every year
during the Adi/Avani Tamil month. They offer prayers in different forms like head shaving, going with just neem leaves
around, lifting the pot with fire, Angapradhakshana, coconut rolling etc.,. People come in tractors, vans and carts with
full equipments including gas cylinders for cooking, stay here and do their rituals. It was an Avani Sunday, an auspicious
day like Adi Friday and so there was a huge crowd.

There are a few temples that are well known for the Lord and his Consort and Tirukkadaiyur is one among them.The Amritaghateswarar - Abirami Temple of Tirukkadaiyur is associated with the legends of Markandeya and Abirami patter. When devas and Asuras churned parkadal to get Amirtham , they forgot to Worship Lord Ganesa (Sri vinayagayar), Lord Ganesa stole the pot of Amirtham and kept at Thirukadiyur, it is believed that the Sivalingam in this temple is made of Amirtha Kudam .

One of the sportive arts of Devikarumari. One day Devikarumari took the image of old nomadic lady and went to Sun to
forecast his future. Without realising her as Devikarumari, He simply neglected her. Devikarumari immediately vanished.
Sun has lost it's brightness and its glory started declining. Realising his mistake He begged Devikarumari to forgive and
excuse him. Sun also requested Devikarumari to celebrate Sunday as the day of Devikarumari.

With the Vaitheswaran Koil, there is a special shrine dedicated to Ankarakan or Sevvai or Mars.
The belief is that if prayers are offered to Ankarakan, he will bestow valor, victory and strength to the person. Upon
entering the temple, devotees first go the Siddhamrita tank. The water is said to have curative properties for various
skin ailments. There is also a widespread belief that a visit here would remove obstacles that delay marriage.
